* Even 44 years after its first publication this is a startling, shocking novel about a homosexual man, written by the remarkable dustwrapper artist of the James Bond novels. ‘Not a novel for the squeamish’, just like the blurb says. Richard Chopping (1917-2008) entered with painter Denis Wirth-Miller into one of Britain’s very first gay civil partnerships (December 2005), after they had lived together for sixty years.

* With a handwritten dedication on the inside upper cover: ‘voor theo [von der Nahmer] en marianne [Dommisse]/ Gerard 22-9-77/ een sta’/ van golgotha/ naar het paradijs/ G’.
Marianne Dommisse (1927-2014) was photographer, her husband, Theo von der Nahmer (1917-1989) was a sculptor. Both lived and worked in Fieret’s The Hague.

* ‘Songs’. Poems by De Haan, born 1881, author of some audacious gay early novels and poetry, who would be murdered in Jeruzalem in 1924. Some about recent life, some dedicated to his Russian friends who had been in the Czar’s prisons. And with two long poems ‘Aan Oscar Wilde’ and ‘Reading Gaol’.

Page 339-350 have been bound in a wrong order, but all pages are present.

* This is one of 6 extra luxe copies bound in full vellum, the upper cover painted with a large bouquet of flowers and at the bottom with the coat of arms of the first owner, Ernst Bircher (brother of the inventor of Bircher Muesli). These and the spine decorations have been hand painted (and signed) by Karl Anneler, who also was responsible for the many fine book illustrations. An extraordinary luxuriously produced and very attractive Swiss book!
