1. CALDWELL, Erskine Original press photo showing Erskine Caldwell and actor Henry Hull. Original photo with stamp (‘OCT 24 1935’) and a captioned ticket pasted on verso. 21,7 x 16,7 cm. Creased. Glue mark from a ticket partly on front margin.
€ 30
* ‘Chicago, Ill. – Henry Hull – who has the principal role in “Tobacco Road”, which was closed by Mayor Edw. J. Kelly, of Chicago, who termed it obscene and sordid, is pictured with the author, Erskine Caldwell. It is expected that a legal battle will be waged to defend the play.’ A strange picture: on stage, a cheerful grinning Hull, with the outfit of a dirty farmer, scoops water from a wooden bucket and hands it to Caldwell who is well-dressed, smoking a cigarette, and broadly smiling to the camera.

2. CANADA PACIFIC De reis per Yzerenweg in Kanada met de Canadian Pacific. No place, Canadian Pacific Railway, 1926. Large size folder. 75 x 36 cm folding into 24 pages. Printed in yellow and black. Fully illustrated with photos. A bit soiled and slightly worn on the sharpest corners. With an adress in the Flemish city of Sint Niklaas written in the address frame.
€ 30
* Attractive and decorative advertisement folder, printed in England, September 1926. This is called the Flemish version, so probably there are English and French versions, too. The text is quaint, from a Flemish or Dutch point of view (for instance, neither ‘Kanada’ nor ‘Yzerenweg’ have never been in use for ‘Canada or ‘spoorwegen’ in the Low Countries)

3. CLAYTON, Margaret (and the town of CLAYTON, California) Original pencil drawing of a creek with a bridge. 1863. Landscape format 24 x 28,5 cm. Paper partially browned and with some marginal tears. Scans on request.

* Pencil drawing made by Margaret Clayton (1820-1908), the wife of Joel Clayton, who founded the town of Clayton, California, in 1857. It’s an attractive amateur drawing of a gated bridge over a creek, with a house in the background, signed ‘Margaret Clayton, Oct. 1863’. Could be 1861 or 1869, too.

4. DASKAM, Josephine De Gedenkschriften van een Baby. Vrij uit het Amerikaansch door Tante Lize. (Translation of Memoirs of a Baby into Dutch). Amsterdam, Jacq. van Cleef, 1905. Original wrappers. (8), 248 p. Illustrated by Fanny Y. Cory. 1st edition. Attractive book.
€ 35
* This entertaining novel was written by American feminist Josephine Daskam Bacon (1876-1951). Almost all the main characters in her more than forty books are women. This book also largely consists of conversations between women, whether or not about the baby in question. This edition closely follows the original published in 1904, including the many funny larger and smaller drawings in the text. Tante Lize is the pseudonym of children’s book author Anna Christina Elizabeth Dopheide-Witte (1869-1951). Translation into Dutch in fine condition.

5. DICKEY, James Large signed original photograph. Very fine original b/w photograph made by Terry Parke in 1979, 24 x 18 cm, with a signed dedication in ink by the poet. Pasted onto a sheet of paper – on the other side of the paper a typed letter has been glued with a signed greeting to a Dutch autograph and photo collector, dated 1983.

On the other side of the sheet part of the original envelope has been pasted with a stamp ’18 jan 1984′.

€125
* Self-portrait: Fabrès stands on a skyscraper in the panorama of New York and releases a dove with a letter, which reads ‘To Oma from Alice and Oscar’ towards a windmill on the other side of the ocean. At the bottom it says ‘New York/ 30 May/ 1946’. Colored in gray, blue, green, yellow and red. ‘Grandma’, Christina Overduin-Kaan (1862-1950), the mother of Oscar’s wife Alice Overduin, celebrated her 84th birthday that day.

Part two of three about the excesses of the degenerate clergy of Spain, but also elsewhere (Popes, Irish). Antonio Gavin (1682-1750) was initially a Catholic priest in Zaragoza. In 1733 he left for America, where he served as an Anglican priest in Goochland County, Virginia, until his death.

€ 120
* Translation into Dutch of the German children’s book Der Mulatte (1859), written under pseudonym by a German Protestant minister, Wilhelm Oertel (1798-1867). This children’s book is about good Florida planters and good Seminoles (about to be christened), and a bad man, the mulatto of the title. It was never translated into English. There are several German editions, but this Dutch edition’s charming lithographic illustrations were never used otherwise than in this rare book of 1863. According to Worldcat, not in any American library, only in the Netherlands (Royal Library).

A few knowledgeable notes in pencil: some calculations and other numbers and comments.
€ 80
* This book is the result of a thorough inspection of sugar industries in the U.S.A. and Cuba in 1901, explicitly meant to improve the factories of the Netherlands East Indies. Some photos taken stealthily, when “everybody was out eating”! It’s in Worldcat, but only in Europe, not in any American library.

17. JACOBS, Aletta Uit het leven van Merkwaardige Vrouwen. (“From the Lives of Remarkable Women”). Amsterdam, F. van Rossen, 1905. Original wrappers. 84 p. All edges red. With portraits. Dedicated in print to the Association for Women’s Suffrage. 1st edition. Small dent, but almost like new.
€150
* ‘These women, whom I have all personally come to know, and can count – insofar as they are still alive – among my good friends, have often given me the courage to continue on the path I have chosen as the path of life. ‘. American Women and one Englishwoman: life sketches of Elizabeth Cady Stanton (Susan B. Anthony’s partner in suffrage), Frances Power Cobbe, Anna Howard Shaw, Carrie Chapman Catt, Helen Loring Grenfell, and Lady Henry Somerset. Columns from the Maandblad van Vrouwenkiesrecht (“Monthly Magazine of Women’s Suffrage”). At the end of the book an extract from the statutes of the Association for Women’s Suffrage and a passionate plea for women’s rights. Moreover, a very nice Jugendstil booklet in improbably intact condition.

18. JACOBS, Aletta, & C.V. GERRITSEN Brieven uit en over Amerika (“Letters from and about America”). Amsterdam, F. van Rossen, 1906. Original cloth. 180 p. With a photographic portrait of C.V. Gerritsen as frontispiece. 1st edition. Not cut open. Incredibly beautiful copy.
€275
* Aletta Jacobs and her husband Carel Gerritsen stayed in America from September to December 1904. The politician Gerritsen, chairman of the Neo-Malthusiaansche Bond (Neo-Malthusian Union), a radical councilor in Amsterdam and former Member of Parliament for the Liberal Democratic Union, reported on what struck him – in ten travel letters ‘Americana’ in the newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad. Gerritsen passed away a year later, and this book is the record of his American journey with additional material, also a monument to the striking politician with the great social heart composed by his free, strong, feminist wife – famous as the first female medical doctor in the Netherlands. Scarce, and also unworn like one rarely sees in a 116 year old book.

19. JULIANA, QUEEN OF THE NETHERLANDS 21 negatives in original envelope, photos taken during the visit of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands to San Francisco, April 17-19, 1952. 21 different negatives. 12 x 10 cm. 27. MAARTENS, Maarten Autograph Letter Signed and dated ’14-X-’06 [De Zonheuvel, Doorn.] Holland’. Letter in English on mourning paper with printed letterhead ‘De Zonheuvel, Doorn.’, signed ‘”Maarten Maartens”‘. Five pages. 17.8 x 11.3 cm. 53 lines. Some traces of glue. Pin holes where a visiting card may have been pinned to the letter.
€ 95
* Maarten Maartens is the pseudonym of J. van der Poorten Schwartz (1858-1915), a Dutch author who wrote in English.
Extensive letter to a ‘Dear Sir’ in Pittsburgh who had given a lecture and invited him for a stay. Maartens writes he is ‘just back from the Aberdeen festivities, where I met Mr. Carnegie who renewed his invitation to my daughter’. He would like to come, but because of his bad health is reluctant to take a fast boat to the USA. ‘I am a disgraceful sailor, but America is worth even that – can any man say more?’ He wonders if he can take his 18-year old daughter along. Very friendly letter by a bit of a pedant who flaunts the name of his famous friends Andrew Carnegie and Admiral F.E. Chadwick and asks the benevolence of the gods in Latin (‘Dii, favete!’) while pondering a tour through Northern America. Not in The Letters of Maarten Maartens.

28. MAARTENS, Maarten Autograph Letter Signed to publisher Funk & Wagnalls in London, dated ’11-11-’13 (De Zonheuvel, Doorn) Holland’. Letter in English with printed letterhead ‘De Zonheuvel, Doorn.’, signed ‘Maarten Maartens’, heavily underscored. 4 p. 17.7 x 11.2 cm. 17 lines. Pin holes where a visiting card may have been pinned to the letter.
€ 85
* The letter exhibits amazement of a book that was sent by publisher Funk & Wagnalls to Josua van der Poorten Schwartz (1858-1915), better known as novelist Maarten Maartens: ‘On my return, this day, from a prolonged absence abroad, I find the book you have kindly sent me. I stand before it, spellbound, as I once stood before the Great Pyramid’. This is probably about the first edition of Funk & Wagnalls Standard Encyclopedia. There are more quaintly reverent sentences in the letter: ‘Your book looks a large one. But the moment we realize in it the Liebig of men’s intellect since Adam, how compactly reasonable in size it appears!’ No wonder the clerk at Funk & Wagnalls wrote in pencil: ‘Please make 3 copies for Prof Hopkins’, possibly to use citations for advertising. Not in The Letters of Maarten Maartens.

* Complete description of all known dirhams of the Samanid dynasty, the medieval Islamic emirs who ruled the area of current Persia, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and other countries. These silver coins were minted extensively from AH 279-394 = AD 892-1004 at 38 mints in Central Asia (for instance Balkh, Bukhara, Ghazna, Herat, Marw, Nishapur and Samarqand). Samanid dirhams were the dominant type in the silver hoards of Eastern Europe from the end of the 9th to the 11th century, thanks to Viking trade.
With systematic information on all coins (types, texts, size, reference (SNAT, Zeno, important collections), many of which are published for the first time. The book is intended for academic research, professional historians, museum staff and for collectors. An example of descriptions in the picture.
