Nieuwsbrief 1000 = Catalogus 85 – Arthur Rimbaud

(Nr. 2)

For the occasion of the International Antiquarian Bookfair in Amsterdam, Marriott Hotel, in June 2022, we presented – as a paper catalogue – a very nice collection around Arthur Rimbaud, the proud work of a Dutch book lover and rimbaldien. Let him speak for himself:
“I was captivated by Rimbaud when I was about seventeen (‘On n’est pas sérieux, quand on a dix-sept ans’, but still). Every young poetry lover knows it: drunk with the beauty, sick with the elusive and incomprehensible, oh so fascinating of poetry. I gorged myself completely on his work, that I breathlessly tried to translate, and made pilgrimages to Charleville and Roche. I collected studies and text editions, but the great works were beyond my reach.
Later, the great fire tempered, but a pilot light always burned. Twenty years ago a first edition of Une saison en enfer finally came my way, a little later a first edition of Les illuminations. And more followed, the fire flared up every now and then.”

This collection was mainly created in the Netherlands and therefore it has the necessary Dutch connections in terms of provenances and publications. Many of these are hardly known outside the Dutch borders: that offers a different perspective on collecting Rimbaud, a fresh look if you want. By the way, you will not find the entire collection on the following pages. About 250 titles, mainly studies and text editions, fell outside the scope of this catalogue.

1. RIMBAUD, Arthur Une saison en enfer. Brussels, Alliance Typographique (M.-J. Poot et Cie), 1873. Sewn. 54 p. Unopened. 1st edition. Cover with faint, minimal foxing, but in excellent condition! € 14 500
* Rimbaud’s first book, a collection of poems and poetry in prose form. Very fine, unopened copy, kept in original condition in a gilt morocco portfolio, which is protected by a gilt morocco clamshell box (Phoenix Bindery). Small stain on the lower side of the clamshell box.
The story is well known: in the summer of 1873, after the break-up with Verlaine, Rimbaud writes Une Saison en Enfer in his mother’s country farm in Roche. He has it printed by the Brussels printer Jacques Poot, but does not pay the bill, after which the entire edition is moved to the attic of the printing house. In 1901, the remaining stock is found there by Léon Losseau, who immediately destroys a number of damaged copies. It was not until 1914 that Losseau published his story. Petitfils I, 1.

A Noir, E Blanc, I Rouge, U Vert, O Bleu
2. (RIMBAUD, Arthur). Paul VERLAINE Les poètes maudits. Tristan Corbière. Arthur Rimbaud. Stéphane Mallarmé. (With three portraits outside the text). Paris, Léon Vanier, 1884. Gilt morocco-backed marbled boards. 56 p. Printed in 253 copies. 1st edition. Original cover not bound in. Vendu
* With the extratext portraits of Corbière, Rimbaud and Mallarmé on Chinese paper. On pages 17 to 41, Verlaine tells about Rimbaud, interspersed with poetry. It is the first edition of the poems ‘Voyelles’, ‘Oraison du soir’, ‘Les Assis’, ‘Les Effarés’, ‘Les Chercheuses de poux’ and ‘Le Bateau ivre’.

3. RIMBAUD, Arthur Les Illuminations. Notice par Paul Verlaine. Paris, Publications de La Vogue, 1886. Gilt vellum-backed boards. 104 p. Printed in 200 numbered copies. First edition. Boards slightly discoloured. A neat private binding; original cover not bound in. Sold
* In 1886, unbeknownst to Rimbaud, Les Illuminations was published in Gustave Kahn’s magazine La Vogue. Shortly after, the book edition followed, a bibliophile edition in 200 copies with a short foreword by Verlaine, which initially sold poorly. Petitfils I, 2.

4. (RIMBAUD, Arthur). Paul VERLAINE Les poètes maudits. Nouvelle edition. Ornée de six portraits par Luque. Tristan Corbière. Arthur Rimbaud. Stéphane Mallarmé. Marceline Desbordes-Valmore. Villiers de l’Isle-Adam. Pauvre Lélian. Paris, Léon Vanier, 1888. Gilt morocco-backed marbled boards (signed Ad. Lavaux; original cover and spine bound in). (4), 104 p. Top gilt. * The first edition of Les poètes maudits appeared in 1884 in an edition of 253 copies, with works by Arthur Rimbaud, Corbière and Mallarmé. It was the first book edition of some of Arthur Rimbaud’s famous poems. This second edition was expanded with two poems by Rimbaud, which appeared here for the first time, and with portraits and work by Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam and Pauvre Lélian (an anagram of Paul Verlaine).

5. (RIMBAUD, Arthur). Paul VERLAINE Les poètes maudits. Nouvelle edition. Ornée de six portraits par Luque. Tristan Corbière. Arthur Rimbaud. Stéphane Mallarmé. Marceline Desbordes-Valmore. Villiers de l’Isle-Adam. Pauvre Lélian. Paris, Léon Vanier, 1888. Sheepskin vellum-backed marbled boards (not signed, bound around 1985 by Hub. Eggen (1922-2014), who learned how to bind books when he was a monk in the beautiful Abbey Sint-Benedictusberg near Vaals in Limburg; original cover bound in (upper cover and first endpaper repaired by leafcasting)). (4), 104 p. Printed in an edition of 600 copies. 2nd, greatly expanded edition. Foxing. Page 17 along the edge somewhat damaged (without loss of text). Old signature (‘J. … Wansink’?) on the original cover. Endpaper with beginning of a Dutch translation in pencil, perhaps by the same Wansink). € 275
* The first edition of Les poètes maudits appeared in 1884 in an edition of 253 copies, with works by Arthur Rimbaud, Corbière and Mallarmé. It was the first book edition of some of Arthur Rimbaud’s famous poems. * Keywords with quotes from the work of fourteen authors, including Jules Laforgue, Stephane Mallarmé, Paul Verlaine and, naturally, Arthur Rimbaud. Ten quotations from Rimbaud were included, six from Les Illuminations and four from poems published in La Vogue, including ‘Les premiers communions’ (twice).

7. RIMBAUD, Arthur Reliquaire. Poésies. Préface de Rodolphe Darzens. Paris, L. Génonceaux, 1891. Gilt morocco-backed marbled boards (signed H. Blanchetière; original cover and spine bound in). XXVIII, 152 p. Top gilt. 1st edition. Scratch on upper cover, otherwise an excellent copy, complete with the original cover, the first title page and the foreword by Rodolphe Darzens. € 4500
* This copy was truffled: it is enriched with the portrait of Rimbaud by Armand Coussens, signed and numbered ’46/50′, which was originally made for Marcel Coulon’s book, Problème de Rimbaud, poète maudit (1923).
The first collection of Rimbaud’s poetry, written in the years 1870-1872 and published in November 1891, when the poet lay on his death bed in Marseille. Part of the edition was withdrawn from the market shortly after publication and re-released a year later, without Darzens’ preface and with a different cover. The copy we offer is of the first edition, with the foreword by Darzens and with the first cover. Petitfils I, 3.

(With two portraits of Rimbaud by Verlaine). Paris, Léon Vanier, 1895. Vellum-backed boards (original first wrapper bound in). XXIV, 136 p. Partly first edition. € 1800
* The first edition of Rimbaud’s complete poetry in book form appeared in 1891 under the title Réliquaire. This 1895 edition was augmented by ten unpublished poems. The two portraits of Rimbaud by Verlaine are published here for the first time (Petitfils IX, II, 1a, 1 and 2), as are the preface by Verlaine and the ‘Notes de l’éditeur’ by Vanier. Petitfils I, 5.

Interesting Dutch Provenance
(With two portraits of Rimbaud by Verlaine). Paris, Léon Vanier, 1895. Sewn. XXIV, 136 p. Part 1st edition. Not a nice copy: original cover and spine slightly trimmed and later glued on with sellotape. Cut. Name stamp on upper and lower cover, on the halftitle and on page (III). € 850
* The first edition of Rimbaud’s complete poetry in book form appeared in 1891 under the title Réliquaire. This September 1895 edition was augmented by ten unpublished poems. The two portraits of Rimbaud by Verlaine were first published here (Petitfils IX, II, 1a, 1 and 2), as were Verlaine’s preface and Vanier’s ‘Notes de l’editeur’. A contemporary name appears on the cover: ‘G. van Tienhoven / October 1895’. Lawyer and prosecutor Gijsbert van Tienhoven Jr. (1867-1900) was a son of the then Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Van Tienhoven (1841-1914), and a close friend of composer Alphons Diepenbrock and other Tachtiger artists.
Interesting, a very early Rimbaud with an early Dutch connection: Van Tienhoven acquired this book in the month after its publication! Petitfils 5.
Added: Gijs van TIENHOVEN Jr., Fluctuatiën. Amsterdam, self-published, 1896. Sewn. 96 p. Printed in 50 numbered copies. 1st edition. Spine slightly torn, foxing on cover. Some tiny mistakes corrected with a thin old pen.
*Philosophical and other reflections in Dutch and French. Also about the Nieuwe Gids movement, ‘prepared by the bourgeois Huet and the plebeian Multatuli’ and about Nietzsche. The booklet ends with a fairly long, French-language discussion between Zarathustra and Pierrot. Arthur Rimbaud is not mentioned in this little book, but on pages 73-75 there is a reflection on Verlaine. Unnumbered copy.

Sewn. 276 p. 1st edition. Reading slant. Book block broken (but still holding). € 200
* 113 letters by Rimbaud, 104 of these first published here. Paterne Berrichon (1855-1922) was Rimbaud’s posthumous brother-in-law and first (but not very reliable) biographer. Petitfils I, 7.

The Rimbaud is the worthy and proud final piece of twenty-five years of making beautiful books.’ Van Dijk 846.

* Memories of literary Paris in 1891. Meetings with, among others, Aristide Bruant, Jean Moréas, Stéphane Mallarmé, Auguste Rodin and Paul Verlaine.
One of the earliest records of Rimbaud in the Netherlands!

François Coppée (1842-1908) was one of the Parnassiens. The Album Zutique, discovered in 1936, contains work by both Rimbaud and Coppée. The poetry of Rimbaud from the collection parodies specific poems by Coppée in a number of cases.

Although Paul Demeny (1844-1918) has been completely forgotten as a poet, he will always be remembered as the person to whom Rimbaud gave his Cahier de Douai, a handwritten cahier with 22 poems, in the autumn of 1870, and of course as the addressee of the Lettre du Voyant of May 15, 1871!
The recipient of the book about Victor Hugo was George Fredrik van Duijl (1856-1907), a businessman from Amsterdam, an admirer and connoisseur of the work of Hugo, member of the Amsterdam literary society Flanor and, moreover, a man who corresponded with Tolstoy!

* Boudewijn Büch, Jacqueline Kranenvitter and Paul Boens are standing in front of the house in Roche on the site of the estate of the Rimbaud family in Roche, where they had established a museum dedicated to Rimbaud; they lived on the estate. (A few years ago, the house, by then in a dilapidated state, was bought by rock star Patti Smith.) In May 1981 Boudewijn Büch and Klaas Koppe visited Charleville and Roche, the two places in the French Ardennes where Rimbaud lived. This resulted in an article for Het Parool and a radio broadcast for the KRO. This photo comes from the estate of Boudewijn Büch.

95. KOPPE, Klaas Original black and white photograph of Jacqueline Kranenvitter with her dog in front of her home in Roche. 30.4 x 23.7 cm. [1981]. With the copyright stamp of Klaas Koppe on verso. € 100
* Jacqueline Kranenvitter with her dog, sitting in the monument she erected in the late 1970s in honor of the fact that Rimbaud had written Une saison en enfer in Roche. Photo from the estate of Boudewijn Büch.

97. KOPPE, Klaas Original black and white photograph of Rimbaud’s bust on the Place de la Gare in Charleville. 30.4 x 23.7 cm. [1981]. With the copyright stamp of Klaas Koppe on verso. € 100
* Charming photo of the famous bust sculpted by Paterne Berrichon in 1901, in the park near the station in Charleville. The photo was taken in the rain, which makes it look like Rimbaud is crying. Photo from the estate of Boudewijn Büch.

98. LÉGER, Fernand Colourful portrait of Rimbaud. 12.8 x 8.5 cm. 1954. Sold
* Made for Le Centre National Des Écrivains (C.N.E.).

99. RIMBAUD, (pseudo-)Arthur La Chasse spirituelle. Introduction de Pascal Pia. Paris, Mercure de France, 1949. Sewn. 64 p. Printed in 3310 numbered copies. 1st edition. € 80
* One of the 3000 copies on vélin pur fil by Johannot.
La Chasse spirituelle is a mythical prose text by Rimbaud, considered a masterpiece by Verlaine, but probably destroyed by his wife. Considered one of the most famous lost works of art, it suddenly was published by Mercure de France in May 1949, introduced by Pascal Pia. André Breton soon exposed the work as a forgery and two young drama students admitted to writing the text.
Sewn. 70 p. 1st edition.
* In this book, published less than two months after the appearance of La Chasse spirituelle, Breton exposed the text as a forgery.

* The August/September 1949 issue of Ad Interim included a partial translation (actually an adaptation) by Slauerhoff of ‘Le bateau ivre’.

The legendary and dizzying account of the Belgian lawyer and bibliophile Léon Losseau (1869-1949), who in 1901 found in a Brussels attic the copies of Une saison en enfer that had never been collected and paid for by Rimbaud.
