* These seven illustrations (all of ladies with their skirts up, a rod about to descend on their bare buttocks), according to the printed leaf, were only for sale for those who had bought Étude sur la flagellation. A second leaf pasted at the inside of the envelope advertises the Carrington title Sophie Arnould. Mentioned (but probably not seen) by Pia on col. 429. According to Guacamole (Charles Carrington (1867-1921). Bibliographie eines Verlags. Berlin, 2005), this publication (nr. 236 in his list) should comprise the 7 illustrations in three states. Our copy has only the accounted-for 7 etchings, but in different states: either in a sketchy state with engraved erotic marginalia (2), a state without these dainty additions, but the pictures finished (4), or with an engraved title (1). The artist of these delicate etching-engravings in a style following the 18th century is unknown. Please feel free to ask for pictures.

* Vroege Nederlandse publicatie geheel gewijd aan het vrouwelijk naakt. Dit betreft een collectie van twee incomplete exemplaren, door een liefhebber uit elkaar gehaald. De laatste (ca. 20) pagina’s en de achterzijde van het omslag ontbreken. Het betreft een boek met Franstalige tekst waarin het lichaam van de vrouw op quasi-wetenschappelijke wijze wordt beschreven. Het is rijk geïllustreerd (gelardeerd) met zwartwitfoto’s van jonge vrouwen. Blijkens de inhoud voorin bestaat het boek uit 14 hoofdstukken, maar er zijn er maar 13 in dit exemplaar aanwezig. Het tweede exemplaar bevat alleen foto’s, de tekst (en de niet-erotische afbeeldingen) zijn eruit verdwenen. Maar dit exemplaar heeft de originele voorzijde van het omslag, en het geeft een indruk van de totale omvang van het boek. Het is niet anders, en daarom ook een stuk goedkoper.

* A rare occurence: a complete year of this very rare German gay magazine in excellent condition. Every issue contains a number of stories and poems, that may seem kitschy now, but probably expressed the deepest feelings of those who lived – most of them anxiously in secret – as male or female homosexuals during the Weimar Republic.
In each number, the cover is used for organisation aspects: subscription, how to advertise (again, scrupulously secretive from ‘normal people’), and where to go ‘out’. In each issue’s last pages publisher Kurt Eitelbuss offers a list of books to read for homosexuals, where we find Herman Bang’s novel Michael, two books by Louis Couperus – Heliogabal and Die Komödianten – Georges Eekhoud’s Escal Vigor, Der Tod in Venedig, Dorian Gray, Verwirrung der Gefühle and some lesser known but not less impressive gay novels like those by Pernauhm and Sagitta.
Finally, there are the ‘Akt-Aufnahmen’ that one may go for, nude photos. If you subscribed to the magazine, you received a ‘little journal’ with personals and other ads, plus a Bilderschau or picture show inserted in your Freundschaft copy, containing some tiny, chaste pictures of scantily clad men, but buyers of the magazine from the newsstand were not so lucky. And neither are they ever present in the rare Freundschaft issues you will find today…
Apart from the short stories and poems, the magazine contains serious articles about (for instance) sex education, blackmailers and politics. In addition, important writers and artists were the subject of short leads: Stefan George, Thomas Mann, Leonardo da Vinci.
This 1930 volume concludes with the Christmas issue, always something special, but in this case it contains memories of Georg Plock (1865-1930), who was a central figure in German gay emancipation: Magnus Hirschfeld’s competent secretary around 1908 during the Eulenburg storms, during the War and its grisly aftermath, and then the organizing force of the Deutsche Freundschafts Verband, the German Friendship Union that associated gay men and women in the 1920s. Plock was mourned by a.o. Magnus Hirschfeld, Karl Besser and Kurt Eitelbuss under the light of a tipped-in portrait photo.

* A mythical book of modern Dutch literature! This copy of the first edition of Pijpelijntjes, published in June 1904, is one of the very few of which the complete original wraps have been preserved, even including the backstrip.
The physician and author A. Aletrino, to whom this openly gay erotic novel was dedicated in print, recognized himself in one of its two main characters (“Sam”, Aletrino’s nickname). Immediately after publication, along with De Haan’s fiancee Johanna van Maarseveen, he bought up the complete edition and destroyed it. Only very few copies escaped destruction. In October 1904, a second, rewritten edition was published. The first edition of Pijpelijntjes is now considered one of the rarest books in the Dutch literature.

* “Who Are We?” Poignant, direct, emotional gay love poetry, rhythmical singing about longing and sorrow. Second of the Buecher der namenlosen Liebe, in first edition, luxuriantly printed in 1000 copies on Zanders Bütten with endpapers of thin Japanese paper, and covers of Imperial Japanese (printed in gold).
Of the planned six Books of Nameless Love, two were first published together in 1906 (this is one of these). After about 200-250 numbered copies had been sold, they were forbidden and were seized by the police. Part of this first edition was recovered by Mackay after 1918 and sold – with a pen line in the place of the edition number. This is one of these unnumbered copies. Of the seven book publications under Mackay’s pseudonym Sagitta during his life (1864-1933) this is the second: SAGITTA 02 (1906). Roeland van Ruijven was a minor theatre author, who published one story about homosexuality in 1906.

Vol. III and IV (the novel ‘Fenny Skaller’ and the Venetian play ‘Ueber die Stufen von Marmor’) were written about 1906, but only first published in this edition. Vol. V was brought out in 1909, and Vol. VI is the pamphlet published in 1908 ‘Gehoer! – Nur einen Augenblick! Ein Schrei.’, (‘Listen! – Just a moment! A shout’) against the Eulenburg scandal. With a twenty-page history of Mackays efforts as a preface for this first collected edition. No publisher is mentioned, only ‘Paris’ which is probably just a mask. Of the seven book publications under Mackay’s pseudonym Sagitta during his life (1864-1933) this is the fifth: SAGITTA 05 (1913). Nice copy hardbound with attractive marbled boards.

* “The Value of Childrens’ Testimonies in Court”. Brochure about children witnessing in court, written by Hubert J. Schouten / Mr. J. Helpman under a different pseudonym. A.o. about Magnus Hirschfeld, citing sad court cases where men were convicted because children were misunderstood. Hubert Schouten, a former vicar, was author of many pamphlets, some about love for adolescents. He was an early, energetic co-worker on the liberation of homosexuals, visiting Hirschfeld in Berlin even before Schorer. Schouten was a man of thunder and lightning in his writings. Theo van der Meer called him a “risky ally”, because he was not absolutely stable and at times not keeping as scrupulously at the good side of the fence of law, as Jacob Schorer himself did.

Twee verschillende edities, beide met een aparte ‘Voorrede bij den tweeden druk’, maar de ene een herdruk met de tekst van de 1e editie (1913), en de andere een ‘Goedkoope uitgave, zonder vreemde woorden’. Prof. B.J. Kouwer had in zijn aanbeveling gevraagd om een tweede druk, ‘die dan in een vorm moge worden gegoten, die den inhoud ook volkomen begrijpelijk maakt voor minder ontwikkelden’. Blijkens een noot in de uitgave op beter papier verschenen beide edities tegelijk. In de goedkope uitgave zijn de Franse en Engelse citaten vertaald en is aan het eind een lijstje toegevoegd van artsen die kosteloos geneeskundig verrichten vóór het huwelijk. Curieus!
