Large oblong portfolio with 22 leaves (3 double) containing 45 pages printed with collotype (‘Lichtdruck’) reproductions of the highly detailed naturalistic drawings by Allers. Some drawings in colors. First edition. Spine worn at the outside and the inside, but the rest of the binding is in good condition. Some foxing, especially at the beginning.

* Humorous pictorial account of a Honeymoon Trip to Italy of a German couple, with very fine views of Milan and Venice. One of the nicest and largest of Allers’s popular book productions. Allers (1857-1915) was implicated at the Krupp scandal at Capri (1902). He had to flee from Italy and the last twelve years of his life were spent restlessly travelling the world.

All edges gilt. First edition. Very good copy with only some minor wear and discoloring on the cover. The fine upper cover illustration with gilt lettering is in nice condition with only a little spotting. Almost unfoxed, an excellently preserved copy.

Apart from Naples, Camaldoli is treated, next to Ischia, Baiae, Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi, Paestum and Castellammare. Fine sights of Pompeii and many portraits of worthy men and beautiful women, and loving depictions of Italian types.

De rijmpjes van Van Ponten zijn uitgeschreven door de tekenaar. Op de voorkant voert Paul Kruger een lepel pillen aan de Engelse minister van Koloniën Joseph Chamberlain, terwijl de man die op de achterkant een met een monocle uitgedoste ezel berijdt sterk aan Winston Churchill doet denken.

* These seven illustrations (all of ladies with their skirts up, a rod about to descend on their bare buttocks), according to the printed leaf, were only for sale for those who had bought Étude sur la flagellation. A second leaf pasted at the inside of the envelope advertises the Carrington title Sophie Arnould. Mentioned (but probably not seen) by Pia on col. 429. According to Guacamole (Charles Carrington (1867-1921). Bibliographie eines Verlags. Berlin, 2005), this publication (nr. 236 in his list) should comprise the 7 illustrations in three states. Our copy has only the accounted-for 7 etchings, but in different states: either in a sketchy state with engraved erotic marginalia (2), a state without these dainty additions, but the pictures finished (4), or with an engraved title (1). The artist of these delicate etching-engravings in a style following the 18th century is unknown. Please feel free to ask for pictures.

An extraordinary luxuriously produced and very attractive Swiss book!

* This copy is nr. 180, with a handwritten, signed dedication in Dutch by the artist under the colophon to Herman van den Eerenbeemt, dated ‘Amsterdam 2 October 1950’. Van den Eerenbeemt (1890-1951), besides being an author, was manager of Van Munster publishing house. On this October day Van den Eerenbeemt speeched at the opening of the exhibition of mural paintings by Vordemberge-Gildewart in the prestigious store of De Bijenkorf. Resplendent and luxurious edition, the second and last volume of the ‘éditions duwaer’, in modern typography without capitals, with many examples (in colors or in black-and-white) of the constructivist art of Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart (1899-1962).

* Attractive book about the tasks of an 18th century housewife, in this case the wife of paper maker James Whatman II, whose father was the inventor (and most important producer) of wove paper. The book was assembled in 1776-1787. Humorous, refined engravings. The scanned picture illustrates the ‘unnecessary temptations of inferior servants’ when they find large joints of meat unnattended.

Spieker C.J.O.-kamp’ en een opsomming van populaire liedjes) op de binnenzijde van het omslag, rug sleets en met vlekken en andere sporen van kampgebruik.

* Vrolijke uitgave van het jonge Groningse drietal F.R.A. (August) Henkels, Dirk Verèl en Ate Zuithoff. Niet alleen boordevol bekende kampliederen, maar ook met (somwijlen melige) limericks, nonsensrijmpjes en Groningse volksliederen (‘Knoalster Lorelei’), alles artistiek vormgegeven en rijkelijk verlucht met speelse lino’s door Verèl en Zuithoff. Een uitgave met bibliofiele pretenties, maar dit exemplaar is ongetwijfeld veelvuldig in een rugzak meegenomen naar jeugdkampen en gehanteerd om het aardappels schillen op te vrolijken.
