* Christian Allers (1857-1915) was famous for his detailed and humorously realistic drawings, published in large portfolios starting in 1885. On his fine drawings, young and old, poor and rich are depicted with benevolent amusement.

* “The Violinist from Salzburg”. Musical story with excellent lithographic illustrations by Jäger, 1895-1980, who left Austria for the United States in 1938. He worked from 1953-1970 at the Hallmark Company, now called Frederick Jaeger. According to his biographer, Jaeger imbued Christmas cards with a distinctly warmer, Austrian touch. The lithograph shows the protagonist of the story practising violin exercises on his old umbrella.

* This copy was printed for the illustrator and enriched with four original watercolors (including a rejected sketch for the cover), three letters of the writer to the embellisher Ranft and one from the professor of medicine S. Baudry, who was very enthusiastic about this book.
A book that is absolutely Right: an exquisite early bibliophile edition, printed in a low number and illustrated with splendid color etchings, gorgeously bound by one of the most prominent binders. Moreover, the copy of the illustrator, festively enhanced with watercolors and author’s correspondence!

* Pochoir is een vooral in het Frankrijk van de de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw veelgebruikt sjabloonprocedé om betaalbaar kleurenprenten in hoge kwaliteit te reproduceren. Deze klassieke roman, die speelt tijdens Lodewijk XIV, is een van de mooiste pochoirboeken met zijn verfijnde, licht-erotische illustraties van Brunelleschi – en bovendien voorzien van een mooie en interessante luxe band.

* Dit is nummer 1 van de oplage. Niet gesigneerd, maar er ligt een gesigneerd briefje in: ‘Met vriendelijke groet’. Bibliografieën geven de Marinevoorlichtingsdienst als uitgever, maar dat moet een grapje zijn: de lino’s tonen ons reusachtige tanks en ongelukkige soldaten, gehangen in prikkeldraad of krijsend van ellende. Eerder een pacifistische uiting van de Haagse kunstenaar Disberg (1921-2004), die in 1957 samen met o.a. Escher in het Stedelijk zou exposeren. Op elke linkerpagina van dit boekje staat de tekst: ‘Zorg dat je er óók bij komt!’
Inliggend: een prospectus (22,3 x 21,7 cm) met op beide kanten een lino van Disberg. Volgens dit blad verscheen deze bundeling van 12 linosneden in 30 exemplaren (november 1952), waarbij elke prent een gesigneerde, met de hand vervaardigde afdruk was. De prijs bedroeg 30 gulden. Bij voldoende belangstelling zou een oplage van 100 genummerde en gesigneerde exemplaren worden vervaardigd die 10 gulden per stuk zouden kosten.
We hebben ook een exemplaar van die tweede oplage voor 35 euro.

* Met opdracht in handschrift van beide auteurs: ‘Voor Chrisje/ van/ Alice en Oscar/ New York 11 April/ 1947.’ Een autobiografisch kinderboek vol heimwee van Alice (eigenlijk Alida) Fabrès-Overduin (1889-1972), die met haar echtgenoot in 1940 naar Amerika gevlucht was. Met haar zuster Anna (1887-1937) groeide ze op in het Noord-Hollandse dorpje Wieringerwaard, waar haar vader dorpsdokter was. Inliggend een doorslag van een overgetypte brief van de schilder Langston Moffett, die vol lof is over het boek. De vlek achterop duidt op een gevalletje-omgevallen inktpot, maar je kunt er ook een gezicht in silhouet in herkennen. Op de binnen-achterflap van het stofomslag staan de portretten van Alice en Oscar.

* Eén van de 15 éxtra-luxe-exemplaren voorzien van een originele tekening van Tytgat: het ontwerp van de tiende litho in het boek, gesigneerd en gedateerd ‘Edgard Tytgat/ 1950′. De tekening is waarschijnlijk ingelijst geweest en heeft een zéér lichte verkleuring langs de rand. De hoekjes zijn iets beschadigd, maar buiten het beeld. Boris Mestchersky (1889-1957) was a Russian prince who came to France in 1920. At first he worked as an artist, but later he entered the theaters of his day. A remarkable book that’s often damaged because of its large size, but this copy is in good condition.
