Nieuwsbrief 722: Halcyon

Vandaag staat het tijdschrift Halcyon van A.A.M. Stols centraal. Typografen als J. van Krimpen, S.H. de Roos en Stefan Schlesinger werkten eraan mee. Tegenwoordig worden de namen van Halcyon-medewerkers verdrongen door de populariteit van één man: M.C. Escher. De vier originele houtgravures van Escher in aflevering 3-4 zijn zeker de moeite waard, maar er is veel meer te beleven aan dit ambitieuze en schitterend vormgegeven tijdschrift.

De verschillende afleveringen van Halcyon handelen over boekillustratie, exlibris, de kunst van de initiaal en allerlei typografische vernieuwingen. J. Barcham Green, Menno ter Braak, S. Carmiggelt (alhier een pseudoniem van Max Nord!), H. van Krimpen, J. van Krimpen, Hans Orlowsky, A. Roland Holst, S. H. de Roos en Stols zelf leverden bijdragen. John Buckland Wright, Aart van Dobbenburgh, J. Franken Pzn., Dirk Harting, Arend Hendriks, Hubert Levigne, W.J. Rozendaal, Pam G. Rueter en Piet Worm zijn vertegenwoordigd met originele grafiek (ets, houtsnede, litho). Lettergekken halen hun hart op aan de Baskerville, Bembo, Egmont, Garamont, Grotius, Janson, Libra, Lutetia, Memphis, Nobel, Romanée, Romulus en de Perpetua.

Fenomenaal drukwerk, kortom. Complete sets van Halcyon worden maar zelden te koop aangeboden. Losse afleveringen zijn ook leverbaar.

* Halcyon is generally considered “the most beautiful typographic magazine ever made in the Netherlands”, which is absolutely true. Publisher Stols used numerous fine quality (hand-made) papers in various formats from several first-class printers. Texts are set in noble fonts as Baskerville, Bembo, Egmont, Garamont, Grotius, Janson, Libra, Lutetia, Memphis, Nobel, Romanée, Romulus and Perpetua, and printed in various colors.

M.C. Escher, ‘Scarabeeën’

This set contains the contribution by G.H. ‘s-Gravesande about M.C. Escher, illustrated with four original wood engravings by Escher, dated and monogrammed by the artist in the blocks. Also added are some extras, not accounted for in the indexes, including two small booklets in the series Typophile.
Complete sets of this quarterly magazine are rarely offered.
