* Very beautiful and fragile picture book of the gifted caricaturist Jan Feith (pseudo: Chris Kras), directed against the English in the Boer War. The rhymes by Van Ponten were written out by the artist. On the front, Paul Kruger carries a spoonful of pills to the British Colonial Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain (‘Joe’), while on the lower cover, the man who rides a donkey dressed with a monocle, strongly reminds us of Winston Churchill.

Matla (dit zijn 40 b en d) heeft ook een derde variant, wij hebben die nog niet waargenomen.

Van opbouw kwam het echter niet. Jan Greshoff was een zoon van de auteur J. Greshoff, die met zijn gezin in 1939 naar Zuid-Afrika was verhuisd.

* ‘Chicago, Ill. – Henry Hull – who has the principal role in “Tobacco Road”, which was closed by Mayor Edw. J. Kelly, of Chicago, who termed it obscene and sordid, is pictured with the author, Erskine Caldwell. It is expected that a legal battle will be waged to defend the play.’ A strange picture: on stage, a cheerful grinning Hull, with the outfit of a dirty farmer, scoops water from a wooden bucket and hands it to Caldwell who is well-dressed, smoking a cigarette, and broadly smiling to the camera.

It’s an attractive amateur drawing of a gated bridge over a creek, with a house in the background, signed ‘Margaret Clayton, Oct. 1863’. Could be 1861 or 1869, too.

* This entertaining novel was written by American feminist Josephine Daskam Bacon (1876-1951). Almost all the main characters in her more than forty books are women. This book also largely consists of conversations between women, whether or not about the baby in question. This edition closely follows the original published in 1904, including the many funny larger and smaller drawings in the text. Tante Lize is the pseudonym of children’s book author Anna Christina Elizabeth Dopheide-Witte (1869-1951). Translation into Dutch in fine condition.

5. DICKEY, James Large signed original photograph. Very fine original b/w photograph made by Terry Parke in 1979, 24 x 18 cm, with a signed dedication in ink by the poet. Pasted onto a sheet of paper – on the other side of the paper a typed letter has been glued with a signed greeting to a Dutch autograph and photo collector, dated 1983.

At the bottom it says ‘New York/ 30 May/ 1946’. Colored in gray, blue, green, yellow and red. ‘Grandma’, Christina Overduin-Kaan (1862-1950), the mother of Oscar’s wife Alice Overduin, celebrated her 84th birthday that day.

* Something you don’t see often: a publication from the town in Michigan founded by the Dutch in 1847, the magazine of Hope College, a Preparatory School annex School of Music, and the Western Theological Seminary was also part of it. With many advertisements full of Dutch names: Boter, Barkema, Lokker, Rutgers, Huizenga and De Vries. And then you have editors like Pasma, Pikaart, Schwitters, Vis, Stronks and Heemstra. With an article by Henry V.E. Stegeman and a report of a number of successful sports competitions (with an image of the winning team, in which we see names such as Stegeman, Warnshuis, Abbink and Vruwink). The publication of Philip Dröge’s book ‘Tawl’ was the reason for my interest in this publication, but unfortunately no Dutch word is used in it.

* Fascinating almanac with calendar, illustrated jokes, a lot of pushing of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, that in fact heal anything. Nice wood engravings.

* This book is the result of a thorough inspection of sugar industries in the U.S.A. and Cuba in 1901, explicitly meant to improve the factories of the Netherlands East Indies. Some photos taken stealthily, when “everybody was out eating”! It’s in Worldcat, but only in Europe, not in any American library.

Maartens writes he is ‘just back from the Aberdeen festivities, where I met Mr. Carnegie who renewed his invitation to my daughter’. He would like to come, but because of his bad health is reluctant to take a fast boat to the USA. ‘I am a disgraceful sailor, but America is worth even that – can any man say more?’ He wonders if he can take his 18-year old daughter along. Very friendly letter by a bit of a pedant who flaunts the name of his famous friends Andrew Carnegie and Admiral F.E. Chadwick and asks the benevolence of the gods in Latin (‘Dii, favete!’) while pondering a tour through Northern America. Not in The Letters of Maarten Maartens.

* The letter exhibits amazement of a book that was sent by publisher Funk & Wagnalls to Josua van der Poorten Schwartz (1858-1915), better known as novelist Maarten Maartens: ‘On my return, this day, from a prolonged absence abroad, I find the book you have kindly sent me. I stand before it, spellbound, as I once stood before the Great Pyramid’. This is probably about the first edition of Funk & Wagnalls Standard Encyclopedia. There are more quaintly reverent sentences in the letter: ‘Your book looks a large one. But the moment we realize in it the Liebig of men’s intellect since Adam, how compactly reasonable in size it appears!’ No wonder the clerk at Funk & Wagnalls wrote in pencil: ‘Please make 3 copies for Prof Hopkins’, possibly to use citations for advertising. Sterkenburg. This now fairly rare novel, about how Japanese soldiers had fought the Chinese, appeared in 1940. On the back of the poster the layout of the book is shown with two extensive press eulogies.

Grappige rijmpjes en tekeningen in de stijl van Wilhelm Busch over het Dieng Plateau, dat gelegen is in de caldera van een vulkaan in Midden-Java en een groot aantal vroegmiddeleeuwse hindoetempels bevat. De identiteit van auteur ‘Ton’ wordt onthuld in een bespreking in het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië van 20 december 1929: het is ‘de heer C.G.Th. Kraemer die te Oengaran (onderneming Sido Redjo) woont’. Met de nodige goede wil kun je die naam ook in de handtekening lezen.
We hebben ook een iets mooier exemplaar zonder schrijversinscriptie voor hetzelfde bedrag.

Kennelijk was hij in 1981 in zijn geboorteplaats op bezoek geweest en had er gesproken met de burgemeester, Aboeng Koesman Somawidjaja (1925-2017), een officier, later vice-gouverneur van West-Java. Dit vriendelijke en uitvoerige antwoord is in uitstekend Nederlands gesteld.

* Samalanga is een district in het noorden van Atjeh, dat in de periode tussen 1870 en 1910 met veel geweld door het Nederlandse leger werd onderworpen. Dit quasi-koldergedicht in namaak-Indonesisch verwijst daarnaar. ‘Kalats mara, koekoe rata!/ Kolla, kalla biram!/ Hakka, steka, schieta, bijta/ Stela, zuipa zwieram’. Maar ook andere elementen komen aan bod, zoals Russen, Turken en het huwelijk. Waarschijnlijk werd het op trouwpartijen gezongen ter verhoging van de feestvreugde.

* Ontroerende, pijnlijk nederige, zeer uitvoerige brief van L. Laseduw te Yogyakarta, die ingaat op een eerder gesprek met de hoofd-employé over de functie van snijveldopzichter. Op het moment van schrijven is Laseduw zonder middelen van bestaan, ‘arme en behoeftig’, maar heeft hij een talrijk gezin te voeden. Vol met frasen,die met prachtige nette letters in een soort geëxponentieerde beleefdheid zijn neergepend.
Randugunting ligt vlakbij het grote hindoe-tempelcomplex Prambanan op Midden-Java.

Emma Georgjevna Nedela (1902-1995) was de uit Riga afkomstige vrouw van de secretaris van het Eerste Landbouw Secretariaat Bernard Willem Kroon, die zich sterk maakte voor geldelijke ondersteuning van de Geallieerden (bijvoorbeeld met de actie ‘Vijf Millioen voor Engeland’). Met ingeplakt een gedrukt strookje op p. 7, waaruit blijkt dat dit boekje door de verzekeringsmaatschappij De Nederlanden van 1845 in Curaçao werd aangeboden ‘bij de herdenking van ons tweede oorlogsjaar’.

Op die bladzij staat de titel van het verhaal ‘Von Heiligen Kanonen’, dat voorafgegaan wordt door een gedrukte brief gedateerd ‘Buitenzorg, Hotel Bellevue, 6.IV. 19…’ en begint met ‘Nein, lieber Herr v. S.’.
Het korte verhaal speelt in Nederlands-Indië en betreft oude Chinese kanonnen in Bantam en Batavia. A. van Stolk is het waarschijnlijk die in het begin en op pagina 291 enkele potloodnotities toevoegde, bij het geromantiseerde avonturenverhaal waar hij ten tonele wordt gevoerd als nuchtere, middelbare Hollandse koopman die zich door een bediende whiskysoda’s laat serveren.
Het betreft hier wellicht Abraham van Stolk Jzn. (1872-1929), directeur van het grote Rotterdamse houthandelsbedrijf, bekend van de Atlas Van Stolk.
